About This Story

Every kid on the street crosses the road to avoid the enormous decorations on our hero's porch. Our hero says goodnight to them by name. So when Halloween morning comes and the porch is EMPTY -- two bare hooks and a torn strand of web -- our hero follows a glowing glass eye down the lane and finds them sitting in the pumpkin field, finished. They think they scared a little one for real. Together they work out the three rules that separate a delicious scary from a real one, discover who actually did it, and fix it -- and by the end of the night the biggest, most frightening thing on the whole street is standing on our hero's porch, facing out into the dark, on purpose.

The moment it lands

The turn comes in a cold pumpkin field, when your child stops trying to talk the bear out of being frightening and asks the real question instead: what is the difference between a good scary and a real one? They find it by testing it -- "scare me," then one flat palm and "stop," and he stops mid-roar. Fingertips on the scar, and it is only stitches. The spider lowering itself all the way down to shake hands. Your child comes home with three rules they can use on rough play, teasing, big kids and films long after October, and with the enormous thing on your own porch turned into the thing that stands guard.

Why it stays on the nightstand

This book hands your family one question that works long after the pumpkins go out: "is that a good scary or a real scary?" Your child leaves with a three-part test they ran themselves -- does it stop when I say stop, does it show me how it is made, does it kneel down at the end -- and that first rule is consent in a costume. It works on rough play, tickling, teasing, big kids, and films. And the enormous frightening thing on your own porch stops being a thing to walk past and becomes the thing standing guard.

What it quietly teaches

Social Awareness: Perspective-taking and social reading: separating how something LOOKS from what it INTENDS, recognising when play has tipped past someone's limit, respecting a "stop" instantly, and repairing rather than punishing when a scare lands wrong
