About This Story

The bag comes home heavy and goes over in one glorious avalanche -- and then the grown-up says the four most terrifying words of the whole night: "you decide, it's yours." So our hero decides one at a time, very fast, without choosing at all, and ends up curled on their side under the porch light. Then the wrappers rustle, the pile gets enormous, and our hero is summoned before the Great Candy Council, where the law is that you must decide about every single candy in the kingdom one at a time, forever -- and the queue goes all the way to the horizon. The secret comes from the one nobody picked.

The moment it lands

The turn comes from the candy nobody ever picks, whispering up from knee height at the back of the queue: you are deciding one at a time, in front of us, while we are all shouting -- nobody can win that. So your child climbs onto the Council table and says your family's actual plan out loud, and the endless queue vanishes all at once. Then, late that night, they stop in the doorway, look at the tin, and walk straight past it -- not because anyone said no, but because past-them already decided. The skill outlives the candy by about fifteen years.

Why it stays on the nightstand

This is the book for the first of November, and the skill inside it long outlives the candy. Your child learns that one decision made out loud while they are calm beats fifty made in front of the pile -- which is the actual mechanism behind every screen limit, every pocket-money rule and every "just one more" you will negotiate for the next fifteen years. It never moralises about sweets, never mentions bodies, and never takes the decision back off your child. And it gives you a phrase you will use all year: "past-me already decided."

What it quietly teaches

Self-Management: Impulse control and planning: recognising when a choice is being made by the situation rather than by you, making one concrete decision in advance instead of many in the moment, delaying gratification by design rather than by willpower, and following through on a plan when nobody is watching
