The moment it lands

It is bedtime and the most important thing in the house is missing. Here is the part your child will lose their mind over: on every single page they can see the cat carrying Bunny off, one room ahead, and the hero cannot. They will tell you. Loudly. Before you finish the line. Then the hunt runs out on the bottom stair, the way it really does — and under the stairs is the cat, fast asleep in a nest it has built out of Bunny, the sock, the dusty crayon, the puzzle piece and half a biscuit. Every single thing your child watched the hero drop. Nobody gets told off; the cat just wanted the soft thing too. Expect to read it until you know it by heart, and to be corrected every time.

Why it stays on the nightstand

The hunt you run at 7pm, made into the story — and made funny. On every page your child can see what the hero cannot: the cat, one room ahead, carrying Bunny off in its mouth. Every wrong thing the hero pulls out and drops along the way — the sock, the dusty crayon, the puzzle piece, half a biscuit — turns up again on the last pages, because the cat has been collecting all of it into a nest. Your child will find it before you finish the line, tell you loudly, and then want to go back to page one and check.
