About This Story

When the storm takes over — hot cheeks, drum-loud heart, hands in fists — our hero shrinks down and travels INSIDE their own body to find out who is doing all this. Deep in the Old Country, where nobody speaks in words, they meet the loyal Watchman ringing his alarm bell, the Drummer following orders, the fogged-in Captain — and discover the one rope in the whole place that answers to THEM. A Magic School Bus-style voyage that shows a child exactly why a slow breath works, so they can believe it enough to use it.

The moment it lands

Shrunk down inside their own body, your child finally meets the one doing all this: a small, devoted Watchman ringing the alarm bell with his whole heart — because a broken tower or a big no looks exactly like a tiger to him. He can't hear words; he's older than words. But breath he's listened to for a million years — and when your child pulls the velvet rope for three slow breaths, the bell quiets, the fog lifts, and the storm finishes its one song. What they carry out is a tool they finally believe in: smell the flower, fog the window, three times — because now they know exactly who's listening.

Why it stays on the nightstand

This book retires "calm down" and replaces it with something that works: Captain Breaths — smell the flower, fog the window, three times — and the gentle mid-meltdown line "your Watchman can't hear words right now, say it in breath." It ends with a hand-on-chest bedtime ritual, so the calm gets practiced on the easy nights too.

What it quietly teaches

Self-Management: Self-regulation through breath, with the mechanism made visible: the body's alarm system responds to breathing, not words — and a slow exhale is the one signal a child can send on purpose
