About This Story
It is bedtime, and the moon is missing. Your child finds it behind the big hill -- huge, round, and wedged tight between two rocks. It nodded off before bedtime and rolled right down the hill. So they get to work: pushing with both hands, scooping away the earth, carrying heavy glowing stones to build a ramp, pulling the vine rope hand over hand, and one last long push. Slowly the moon rises, pours its light over the hill like a blanket, and carries your child home on a single silver beam. Your child does every push and pull as you read -- the heavy kind of moving that settles a body -- and the last words they hear are your own, in the moon's voice.
The moment it lands
The moon fell asleep before bedtime and rolled down behind the hill -- and only your child, wide awake, is strong enough to help it up. They push with both hands, scoop away the earth, carry heavy glowing stones, and pull the rope hand over hand -- and your child does every push and pull with you as you read. Then the moon rises because of them, pours its light over the hill like a blanket, and floats them home on a silver beam. The moon's last words are the ones you chose.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Most bedtime books ask a child to stop. This one gives them a job. The middle of the book is heavy work -- push, scoop, carry, pull -- the kind of effortful movement occupational therapists use to settle a revved-up body, and your child can do every move against your hands. Then the moon rises because of them, and the tiredness at the end is the earned kind. The moon's last words are yours.
What it quietly teaches
Social Awareness: Noticing that someone (even the moon) needs help, and staying with a hard job until it is done
