About This Story
The tower fell. That is a real catastrophe when you are two, and this book does not pretend otherwise. What it does instead of explaining is move: stomp it out, roar it out, blow it out, squeeze it out, shake it out, push it into the wall, and then flop. Every page is one action your child does while you read it, so the whole routine gets rehearsed on a calm afternoon and is there to reach for on a loud one. Nobody is told to calm down. The feeling is not bad and it is not gone at the end — it is just spent.
The moment it lands
The tower fell, and this book does not pretend that is small. It also does not explain anything — it moves. STOMP. ROAR. BLOW. SQUEEZE. SHAKE. PUSH. Your child does each one with you on a calm afternoon, so that on a bad morning you have something to say that is not "calm down": you have the chant they have been shouting all week — "Big feeling, big feeling, hear me shout — out, and out, and OUT!" The grown-up arrives afterwards and sits on the floor, and the broken thing stays broken. Then comes the last page and a half: the next morning YOU drop the entire bag of shopping and go still in exactly your child's page-one pose — and your child climbs down off the chair, takes your hand, and teaches you the words. The two of you stomp in the middle of the spilled shopping. Your child says the last line of the book.
