About This Story
A young dragon is looping past the window with the hiccups -- and every hiccup pops a burst of golden sparks, so it cannot settle. So your child climbs on. They swoop over the mountains, loop over the lake and flap up through the clouds, until it is time to teach the dragon what your child already knows: how to land slowly, and how to breathe. Smell the flower. Blow out slow. The first try is a puff of sparks. The next is a perfect silver smoke ring -- and the hiccups are gone. Then smaller rings, then wisps, then nothing but warm breath. Your child does every swoop and every breath as you read, and the dragon falls asleep in its mossy nest -- right before your child does.
The moment it lands
Your child rides a young dragon over the mountains -- swooping, looping, flapping up through the clouds -- until it is time to help it sleep. The dragon has the hiccups, and every one pops a burst of sparks, so your child teaches it to breathe: smell the flower, blow out slow. Sparks. Then a perfect smoke ring -- and the hiccups are gone. Then wisps. Then only warmth. Your child does every breath along with it, and the dragon curls up in its mossy nest, fast asleep. A glowing scale on the nightstand proves it all happened.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Children learn a calming skill best by teaching it. Here your child is the expert: the dragon is the wound-up one, and your child shows it how to land slowly and how to breathe -- smell the flower, blow out slow. The book moves from a thrilling flight to slow flaps to longer and longer out-breaths, so your child practises the real breathing technique four times over while thinking they are helping a dragon. The fire is never scary; the dragon is never in trouble.
