About This Story
The night outside is playing too fast -- frogs on their banjos, crickets on their fiddles, owls on their pipes -- and the owl who conducts them has fallen asleep. So her glowing baton slips into your child's hand. Your child waves it fast, then faster, then flings both arms up for the loudest moment of the night. Then they bring it down in big slow circles, and one by one the musicians put down their instruments: the fiddles sway, the drum rests, the frogs hum, the owls breathe one long note. When the whole night garden is silent, one sound is still playing. Your child puts a hand on their heart and finds it: the last song is theirs.
The moment it lands
Your child takes the baton from a sleeping owl and conducts the whole night: fast, faster, and the loudest moment with both arms flung up to the stars. Then they bring it down in slow circles, and one by one the musicians stop -- the fiddles sway, the drum rests, the frogs hum, the owls breathe one long note. In the silence, one sound is still playing. Your child puts a hand on their heart and finds it. The last song of the night is theirs.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Children love to be in charge at bedtime, so this book puts them in charge of the whole night's tempo. They conduct fast, faster and loudest, then bring every musician down to silence themselves -- slow circles, swaying, humming, one long breath. The ending is a real calming tool: a hand on the heart, noticing the heartbeat, counting it slow. Nobody tells your child to be quiet. They make the quiet.
What it quietly teaches
Self-Awareness: Noticing the body's own signals -- here, the heartbeat -- and using them to settle
