About This Story
Tonight your child IS the storm. Riding a cloud over the rooftops, their stomp makes the thunder, their flicked fingers make the lightning, their arms make the wind and their wiggling fingers make the rain -- over the town, the fields, the forest and the sea. Then, over the place they love most, they spot a little bird asleep in its nest -- and the storm chooses to be gentle, so it will not wake. Drizzle. Mist on one long breath. A lake so still it holds the moon. One last raindrop with one star in it. Every page is a move your child does as you read, and the storm gets sleepy right along with them.
The moment it lands
Tonight your child is the storm. Their stomps are the thunder, their fingers flick the lightning, their arms whoosh the wind across the forest. Then, over the place they love most, they spot a little bird asleep in its nest, and the storm goes gentle so it will not wake. Your child breathes out the mist, lies down on the cloud and lets the lake go still as glass. One last raindrop with one star in it -- and the storm, and your child, are asleep.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Your child gets to be the loudest, biggest thing in the sky: stomping thunder, flicking lightning, whooshing wind, drumming rain. Then they bring the whole storm down themselves -- slower taps, a long misty breath out, heavy arms, a still lake. For a child who is frightened of storms, being one and putting it to sleep turns thunder into something they own. Nobody tells the storm to stop. It simply gets sleepy.
