About This Story

After a wound-up day of holding it all in, our hero is buzzing — wiggly at dinner, slamming doors, and every "calm down!" makes it worse. Then, in the backyard, they watch a rabbit escape the neighbor's dog, stop, shake nose to tail... and hop away light as a dandelion puff. "Why did you shake?" — "To put the running back." The animals of the yard teach the secret every creature knows and people forgot: a big day fills your legs with running, and the running must be spent, not swallowed.

The moment it lands

The whole book turns on one backyard moment: a rabbit escapes the neighbor's dog, stands up in the clover, shakes nose to tail — and goes back to nibbling, calm as Sunday. "Why did you shake?" your child's hero asks, and gets the answer every animal knows and people forgot: "To put the running back." Your child comes inside with a full menu they can use after any big day — shake it, run it, roar it, push the tree that won't budge — and on the last pages, it's the kid who spots the grown-up's wound-up shoulders and says "come on, I know what to do."

Why it stays on the nightstand

For the wound-up evenings when "calm down" only winds the spring tighter, this book hands you the phrase that actually works: "let's go put the running back." The shake-out, the run to the fence, the roar, the tree-push — your child learns the whole menu, and the wiggly nights stop being anyone's fault.

What it quietly teaches

Self-Management: Body-based self-regulation: recognizing held-in stress energy and completing the stress cycle through movement before attempting calm
