About This Story
In your child's window, a hanukkiah glows beside a Christmas tree — and your child has started to worry that the two holidays are taking turns, that one of them always has to be second. One night, the light of the shamash and the light of the star on the tree lift out of the window and take your child out into the snowy town. The star shines high, so anyone can find their way home. The shamash is the helper that lights all the others. And when a little lost puppy cries in the dark woods, neither light can find it alone — until your child walks between them. A book for interfaith families, with both your family's traditions in it, and your own window if you add a photo.
The moment it lands
Your child worries the two holidays are taking turns. Then the light of the shamash and the light of the star on the tree lift out of your window and take them out into the snowy night, where a little lost puppy needs finding — and neither light can do it alone. Your child walks between them. Back home, with both sides of the family around them, they say it: not half of two holidays. All of both.
Why it stays on the nightstand
For families who light a hanukkiah and trim a tree. Your child's real worry — that they have to pick one — is answered by the two lights themselves, who discover on a snowy night adventure that they do the same thing: they light the way for someone else. Each holiday keeps its own identity; both sides of your family are in the book by name. The last line is the one you hope your child carries for life: not half of two holidays — all of both.
