About This Story
Today is checkup day and our hero is NOT excited. The waiting room is boring, the exam room is cold, and somewhere in there is a SHOT. But the stethoscope has a secret: it hears the hero's heartbeat as a DRUM SOLO! The blood pressure cuff is a squeeze-hug! The tongue depressor makes the companion do the funniest AHHH face ever! And when the shot comes — one tiny brave moment — the hero discovers THE BRAVEST BANDAID, which glows with the light of every kid who was ever scared and did it anyway. Turns out, being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It means being scared and squeezing your companion's hand.
The moment it lands
The shot gets exactly one honest page — a little pinch, a squeeze of the companion, three seconds of brave — and then comes the part your child will talk about: the Bravest Bandaid, which only glows for kids who were scared and did it anyway. On the way out, their hero passes a kid in the waiting room wearing the exact face they wore an hour ago, and gives them the look that says "you're going to be okay." Your child arrives at their real appointment with a plan: hold the buddy tight, breathe, count to three — and earn the glow.
Why it stays on the nightstand
Read this the night before the checkup and tomorrow gets easier: the stethoscope is a drum-solo machine, the blood pressure cuff is a balloon, and the shot is told honestly — three seconds of brave. The companion-squeeze from the story works in the real exam room, and so does the promise that being scared and doing it anyway is the bravest kind of brave.
What it quietly teaches
Self-Management: Developing courage strategies for uncomfortable situations, understanding that bravery coexists with fear rather than replacing it
